What are Stem Cells?

These are cells found in all multicellular organisms that can divide into two identical cells through a process called mitosis. A stem cell is able differentiate, or evolve, into a more advanced cell and is able to self-renew and produce more stem cells when needed. Adult stem cells work as a repair system and are able to replenish adult tissues helping injuries heal much quicker.

Traditionally, adult stem cells, called mesenchymal stem cells are harvested from the patient's bone marrow and are cultured over a period of a week or two because there are not large amounts found here. The harvested stem cells can differentiate into bone and cartilage making them ideal for regenerating damaged joint areas.

Recent breakthroughs have found that the stem cells found in fat are actually mesenchymal as well. With modern tools and procedures, we are now able to separate stem cells from fat that is loaded with hundreds to thousands of times the amount found in bone marrow. Seeing as most people will have an adequate fat supply, there is no real need to harvest the cells from bone marrow and culture them over long periods. Stem cell therapy is no longer a week or two week process, it is now a same day procedure.

Uncertain without knowing the exact procedure.
Need explanation from Dr. Katzman.

What is Regenerative Medicine?

Regenerative medicine is the process of either replacing or regenerating human cells, tissues, or organs to restore proper function of the damage by stimulating the body's process for repairing it.

Are there ethical issues associated with harvesting adult stem cells?

Because the adult stem cell (mesenchymal) is harvested from the patient, there are no ethical issues that would arise from other stem cell procedures such as embryonic stem cell therapy.

Will my body reject the stem cells?

No, because adult stem cells are harvested from your own fat, it makes them a perfect match for you with no risk of rejection.

Is adult stem cell therapy covered by insurance?

Stem cell therapies are not paid for by U.S. insurance companies. However, many European and government funded health insurance plans provide coverage for stem cell procedures. Please check with your health care system for more information.

Do you use stem cells from any other animal source or person?

No, we only use adult stem cells harvested from the patient. Because of this there is no risk of contamination or rejection during the procedure.

Where can I get more information on stem cell treatments?

If you require more information, a member of our medical team is available to answer any questions you may have. You can leave a message by contacting us and one of our medical representatives will be in touch with you, or you can make an appointment by calling 1-877-907-0602.

Is this treatment FDA Approved?

Because we use mesenchymal adults stem cells harvested from your own body to repair and encourage healing with very limited manipulation, FDA approval is not required.

What conditions would exclude me from being able to undergo adult stem cell therapy for orthopedics?

Not everyone is a candidate for stem cell therapy.
Factors that will rule you out as a candidate include:

  • Not Treated - There are many different conditions that may be treated with adult stem cell therapy, but SCI only treats conditions that we specialize in treating.
  • Advanced Conditions - If your condition has advanced too far or is too severe, you may be declined although other treatments may be available.
  • Bleeding Disorders - Patients taking blood thinning medication, or who have a bleeding disorder may require a special evaluation to decide if you are a candidate.
  • Infection - If you have an infection anywhere in your body, it will need to be treated and healed before stem cell therapy can be performed.

Are there any clinical trials involving adult stem cells?

Because adult stem cell therapy is full of so much potential to cure many conditions that were thought incurable in the past, there are many clinical trials providing very encouraging results.
